Results from the October 12th, 2007, Chateau Garage tasting — Chardonnay — held at the San Jose State/Hawaii tailgate.
This tasting was particularly interesting in that chardonnalry style preferences—crisp/fruity vs. oakey/buttery— took what could have
been a couple of potential top finishers into a tie for second. For example, three of us liked the crisp/fruity (two 1st and a 2nd) , whereas another three liked the oakey/buttery (two 1st and a
3rd).
You either liked one style or the other, with very little in between. It was also interesting that none of us picked out the Fume Blanc, which is not totally unexpected given that many Californmia Chards are moving in the crisp/fruity direction, and could easily be confused with a Fume Blanc. The French Chard scored dead last which again, would not be totally unexpected in that — as our resident expert Marc says — French Chards tend to be a bit harsh while young, but will generally age significanly better than California Chards.
